What is CBD?
CBD is also known as Cannabidiol. It is the most abundant compound found in the hemp plant.
CBD and THC Cannabinoids
Cannabinoids are the name of the compounds found in the cannabis plant. There are over 110 different cannabinoids. Cannabidiol (CBD) and Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) are two cannabinoids found in the plant with the highest concentrations, and therefore the most recognised and the most studied.
Cannabinoids are neurotransmitters just like hormones, and our bodies have a network of receptors they can affect and bind to. This is called the endocannabinoid system (ECS).
Types of Cannabinoids
There are two types of cannabinoids that are present in cannabis plant. The two types of cannabinoids are as follows:
1. CBD known as (Cannabidiol responsible for many medical treatments)
2. THC known as (tetrahydrocannabinol psychoactive compound in marijuana that causes the high associated with cannabis use.)
These cannabinoids react with the special receptors in our body known as cannabinoids receptors.
The Endocannabinoid System
The Endocannabinoid System (ECS) is one of the most important neurotransmitter system in the human body, the function of which is to create a stable internal balance (homeostasis) and to protect, regulate and maintain vital functions of the immune system from body temperature, water balance, blood sugar level, memory and bowel function to hunger, thirst and sleep. It is a complex, comprehensive system that regulates both our body’s physical functions aswell as our mental state.
Cannabinoids from the plant kingdom is called phytocannabinoids while cannabinoids produced naturally in humans and animals are called endocannabinoids.
By supplementing phytocannabinoids in our diet we activate the ECS receptors and complement our own endocannabinoids in maintaining balance. If necessary, physical and mental healing processes and pain killing effects will be triggered.
Cannabinoids have also been shown to promote brain development and learning ability. Being able to think in new ways and breaking old habits is an important component in personal development. With the help of cannabinoids, we can not only stay healthy and strong, but also develop beyond limiting thoughts and behavior patterns.
What is the Difference between Hemp and Cannabis?
There are many different varieties of cannabis in the world, but what makes a plant hemp or marijuana depends on how much THC a plant has in its genetics. The levels tend to vary between different varieties. If a plant has a THC content not exceeding 0.2%, it is classified as industrial hemp and is therefore legal to cultivate in the EU by certified farmers. If a plant has a THC content above 0.2% it is classified as marijuana and is illegal in most countries.
CBD and THC
Many studies show that CBD (Cannabidiol) can provide a natural protection against becoming high on THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol) and also counteract its negative effects such as memory loss, paranoia and the sleep-inducing effects.
One can say that CBD and THC are like two opposites. CBD is the uplifting, energizing, non-psychoactive aspect. While THC is the anesthetic, sedative and psychoactive part.
Neither CBD or THC has been shown to pose a risk of fatal overdose. But to reduce any side effects, it may be better for medical users to only use cannabis with higher levels of CBD.
Much of this content comes from foreign sources where cannabis is legal for medicinal use. In Sweden, it is still illegal to buy or possess cannabis with a THC content above 0.2% for home use or for medicinal purposes.
Hemp is a Superfood
Today hemp seeds and hemp seed oil are sold everywhere in health food stores. But what many don’t know is that the flowers, leaves and stalk from the hemp plant is also edible. The plant contains in addition to cannabinoids and terpenes, high levels of antioxidants, flavonoids, chlorophylls, fatty acids, vitamins, minerals and amino acids. The plant can be juiced fresh, ground down to a superfood powder or eaten raw in salads.
When the plant is dried, heated or burned, the cannabinoids converts from their acid form to their base form. This is called decarboxylation. Getting high and intoxicated is therefore only a side effect of smoking or eating decarboxylated cannabis varieties with higher levels of THC. This does not happen if you use the plant raw and fresh.
CBD Health Suppliment
CBD appears to be a health supplement that has no addictive effect and have a therapeutic value for a number of medical conditions. The CBD is safe to use because our body have special kind of receptors which receive these cannabidiol and have good effect on the human body. Our body also produces CBD through endocannabinoid systems that have a major role in keeping us healthy.
